About me

Hui, aloha! My name is Belinda, also known by my Hawaiian name Kalani. A mixed Native Hawaiian and Native Mexican woman born and raised in the Bay area, I moved home to Hawai'i at 19, and have been here ever since! I am the creator and owner of Native Diaspora, a brand and podcast that weaves us together as a people. Native Diaspora's fabric stems from 3 words I created, Dekālānize, Remālanize, and Rewaitalize. Kāla in Hawaiian means money, māla means garden, or cultivated fields, and wai means water. Essentially undoing the system built by billionaires and elites, and reverting back to ‘āina and community, steering away from mass corporations and keeping sust’āinability and barter systems in mind.

Whether I cultivated it myself, it is the idea that if I’m not making it, I’m supporting my community and a small or local business that can. Select products are donated to frontline organizations and a family in Palestine. I’ve recently decided to expand my business and skills to one of my truest passions- astrology. Since I was a child, I was obsessed with the stars, spells, and readings. Kalani also means sky, heavenly, and spiritual, so I guess you can say it fits.

There are several forms and practices of astrology. My speciality is in Tropical also known as Western or Seasonal astrology based on the 12 zodiac signs. I do both whole sign and Placidus readings, though I am more comfortable with whole signs. I also incorporate some Hawaiian practices, though Hawaiian astrology wasn’t really practiced, I like to combine Hawaiian Birth signs and the mahina (moon) in my practices. Did you know if you were born at night, you’re more likely to be a night person? Or according to Hawaiian birth signs, if you were born during a certain month you were said to have a set of skills and certain personality traits? For years, I gave free birth chart readings because I didn’t think it was appropriate to profit off a culture that wasn't mine; however, with more research that I’ve done, I’ve learned that my ancestors did in fact practice astrology. Tropical astrology is not “owned” by one culture, it is global. Emerging from diverse civilizations including Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Indian, Chinese, and Mayan societies and later adapted across late medieval Europe.
